About

Doing art in the Art Room is a fun and educational process, where students get to choose their own ARTventure! I will guide each artist through the creative process with personalized art projects linked to art history and art appreciation.

My Approach: It’s all about the process

In the Art Room, each artist creates a customized art project that is engaging and meaningful to them. They first conference with me and do a little research before choosing the type of art and the subject matter for their project. Together, we map out the step-by-step process for the project, which helps guide their work time. As the student creates their masterpiece, I provide instruction on art skills and techniques as well as embed art history and art appreciation to deepen understanding. In the end, the artist reflects on the process as well as their artwork, then shares their art with peers.

The Benefits

Successfully navigating through the art process requires many decisions to be made, problems to be solved, and steps to be followed. This makes it excellent practice for dealing with life while also being a valuable form of personal expression. Art education has been shown to improve one’s critical thinking skills, creativity, problem solving, cultural understanding, and empathy. From heartfelt opinions to imaginary worlds and everything in between, artists represent their unique perspectives and ideas with beautiful creations. In other words, they show an abstract idea or feeling with a concrete physical object, requiring imagination and complex cognitive skills. Artists also consider what and how their art will communicate to their audience, which in turn, helps them to understand the perspectives and ideas of other people. Finally, art provides students more tools for success in learning both abstract and concrete academic concepts while also providing a fun and engaging way to study science, social studies, language arts, and math.
